El was born and raised on an Iowa farm and came to Salem in 1967 to establish
his ophthalmology practice.
After graduating from the University of Iowa School of Medicine in 1961, he
completed an internship at Santa Monica Hospital in California. He served there
as Director of Medical Education for a year before returning to the University
of Iowa for his residency in ophthalmology.
El is past president of the Salem Hospital Medical Staff. He and his wife,
Vivienne, have four children. Playing golf, fishing and gardening are El’s favorite ways to spend his leisure time.

Thomas R. Stevens, M.D., P.C.
Board Certified
Tom started his practice in Salem in 1974. He grew up in Madison, Wisconsin and
graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine.
Tom worked for the Public Health Service on Native American reservations in
Washington and Idaho before completing his ophthalmology residency at the
University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He completed a fellowship in cornea
studies at the University of California in San Francisco. Tom was an Assistant
Professor of Ophthalmology on the faculty of Southwestern Medical School in
Dallas, Texas from 1972 to 1974.
He is past president of the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology. Tom and his wife,
Ellen, have three children. He enjoys family activities, sports, music,
woodworking and tropical fish.

U. John Berzins, M.D., L.L.C.
Board Certified
John established his Salem practice in 1985. He was born in New York City
shortly after his parents emigrated from Latvia and he grew up in South Dakota
and Minnesota.
A Stanford University School of Medicine graduate, John interned at Pacific
Medical Center in San Francisco and then worked as an emergency room physician
for three years. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of
Iowa in 1983 and was in private practice in Iowa for two years.
John is a past president of the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology, serves as an
Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology and is on the
faculty of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. John enjoys
fishing, hunting, and traveling with his wife, Dace. They have two children.

Robert E. Tibolt, M.D.
Board Certified
Bob joined Medical Center Eye Clinic in 1992. He grew up in Reno, Nevada,
graduated from Dartmouth College and received a Ph.D. in anatomy from the
University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He held a junior faculty
appointment there until he entered medical school at the University of Texas in
San Antonio.
Bob took an internship in internal medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in
Portland before completing his ophthalmology residency at Casey Eye Institute,
Oregon Health and Science University.
He has served as President of the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology, councillor to
the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and is on the faculty of OHSU.
Bob and his wife, Susan, are the parents of two sons. In his free time, Bob
enjoys sports of all kinds, map making, model building and many outdoor
activities.

Marcus A. East, M. D., L.L.C.
Board Certified
Marc was born and raised in Salem, Oregon. He graduated from South Salem High
and went to the University of Oregon. He earned his medical degree at Penn
State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. There he
completed his internal medicine internship and his ophthalmology residency.
Marc returned to Salem to join Medical Center Eye Clinic in 2006. He is a
clinical instructor at the Veterans Hospital in Portland. He is a frequent
speaker for Salem Hospital in their diabetes education classes. His practice is
in routine and medical eye care and surgery. He has a large pediatric and adult
care practice.
Marc and his wife, Amy, have three children. He enjoys running, outdoor
activities and spending time with family.
